A Community Dream Brought to Life
The story of The Lenches Amphitheatre is one of vision, determination and true community spirit—right here in the heart of the Vale of Evesham, Worcestershire.
What visitors see today as a unique and thriving outdoor theatre in The Lenches actually began as an ambitious idea over 20 years in the making. Led by The Lenches Sports & Recreation Club (LSRC), a local charity at the centre of village life in Church Lench, the project was driven by a simple but powerful vision: to make the most of a beautiful natural landscape and create a space for live performance unlike anything else in the Midlands.
A Vision Inspired by the Landscape
Set against sweeping views of the Severn Valley and the Malvern Hills, the site’s curving slope sparked an idea—why not transform it into a natural amphitheatre for outdoor theatre, music and community events?
The concept was simple but exciting: terraced seating, open skies, and a shared cultural experience where audiences could relax with family and friends while enjoying live entertainment in a truly special rural setting. The response from the local community was overwhelmingly positive, with residents across The Lenches and Evesham embracing the idea from the outset.
Community Support at Its Core
From the very beginning, this has been a community-led theatre project in Worcestershire. With support from Wychavon District Council, including a £95,000 Community Legacy Grant, the idea began to take shape and move towards reality.
But what truly sets The Lenches Amphitheatre apart is the incredible level of local involvement. Skilled professionals—including architects, engineers and builders—generously offered their time and expertise, helping transform a basic concept into something far more ambitious.
Local businesses and supporters also played a crucial role, from donating materials to providing practical support during the build. These contributions helped ensure the finished amphitheatre reflected the beauty of its surroundings and the passion of those behind it.
From Dream to Reality
Despite challenges along the way, including funding limitations and delays, the project continued to move forward thanks to the dedication of volunteers and the wider community. What began as a long-term aspiration has now become a 250-seat outdoor performance space near Evesham, hosting theatre, music and community events for audiences from across Worcestershire and beyond.
